  • Hispanic media is holding its own during the economic slide and tide of fading newspaper circulation, according to a study by the Pew Research Center's Project for Excellence in Journalism. While English-language dailies saw a 5 percent circulation decline in 2010, Latino dailies grew 2 percent. Growth was also demonstrated among Hispanic magazines, radio and television.   • This month's issue of Poder noted a Latino "became only the second living Medal of Honor awardee since the Vietnam War at a White House ceremony. Sgt. First Class Leroy Petry, 31, was honored for saving the lives of fellow Army Rangers, despite being shot in both legs and losing a hand during a 2006 raid on a compound in Afghanistan."
  • The same issue of Poder announced that "Netflix will be launching its Internet movie subscription service in Latin America and the Caribbean. The video rental business' subscribers in countries such as Mexico, as well as in South America, Central America and the Caribbean, will be able to stream a wide range of movies and popular TV shows on computers, smartphones and gaming systems. The service will be available in Spanish, Portuguese and English."
  • "In a blistering condemnation of the second-largest police force in the United States, the Justice Department is accusing the Puerto Rico Police Department of a 'profound' and 'longstanding' pattern of civil rights violations and other illegal practices that have left it 'broken in a number of critical and fundamental respects,'" the New York Times reported September 8. "The report recommends 133 remedial measures that would amount to a sweeping intervention. It is likely to create a political headache for Puerto Rico's governor, Luis Fortuño."
  • "Photographs of a frail but apparently well Fidel Castro were posted on a Cuban government website (September 8) following recent rumors that the 85-year-old former president was gravely ill or had died. Castro, who had been out of sight for two months, was shown in what looked to be his Havana home chatting with Venezuelan state television commentator Mario Silva." - Chicago Tribune, September 8, 2011
