  • "In the wake of the new Arizona law allowing the police to detain people they suspect of entering the country illegally, young people are largely displaying vehement opposition," the New York Times reported in its May 18 edition. "Meanwhile, baby boomers, despite a youth of ‘live and let live,’ are siding with older Americans and supporting the Arizona law." The story was based on a May New York Times/ CBS Poll.
  • Mexican President Felipe Calderon criticized the Arizona law before a joint meeting of Congress saying the legislation "introduces a terrible idea using racial profiling as a basis for law enforcement." Calderon urged lawmakers to take up the immigration issue this year, a comprehensive reform which "is crucial to securing the two countries’ common border." - Chicago Tribune, May 20, 2010
  • "An Associated Press-Univision Poll found that 61 percent of people overall said Hispanics face significant discrimination, compared with 52 percent who said blacks do and 50 percent who said women," the press agency reported May 21. "The survey also underscored how perceptions of prejudices can vary by ethnicity. While 81 percent of Latinos said Hispanics confront a lot or some discrimination, a smaller but still substantial 59 percent of non-Hispanics said so." - NewsOne.com, May 22, 2010
  • "Just 1-in-10 Hispanic high school drop-outs has a General Educational Development (GED) credential, widely regarded as the best 'second chance' pathway to college, vocational training and military service for adults who do not graduate high school," according to a Pew Hispanic Center analysis of newly-available education attainment data from the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2008 American Community Survey. - Pew Hispanic Center, May 13, 2010
  • "Hispanic Business ranked the Top 25 Latino Nonprofits in its May issue. Together, they increased total expenditures by 2.4 percent to $822 million. The top three and their 2009 expenditures are:
    1. AltaMed Health Services Corporation, Los Angeles, $130 million
    2. Mexican American Opportunity Foundation, Montabello, CA, $69 million
    3. The Aspira Association, Washington, DC, $61 million
  • Actress/ businesswoman Eva Longoria Parker made the cover of this month’s Hispanic Latina Issue. Others featured were entrepreneur Daisy Fuentes, actress Penelope Cruz and Olympic skating medalist Jennifer Rodriguez.
  • The May 10 double issue of Time was devoted to "The 100 Most Influential People in the World." Among them were "Brazil’s champion of the working class" President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and "judicial trailblazer" U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor.
